The term "Mid-size Business" tends to cover a wide range of businesses, and the line is often unclear.

  • A small business can experience fast growth, and one day it wakes up and it is no longer "small".
  • A hot start-up with investor funding may think like an enterprise because they're well-funded, but their numbers and size suggest they're smaller than they think.

Fortunately, when it comes to technology and infrastructure, it's a bit easier to see who's small, who's big, and who's in between.

The "in-between" issues often pose the greatest technology challenges for a mid-sized business:

  • You have some technical staff, but usually just enough to support your day-to-day operations and "put out fires". At the end of day, there's usually no time left to pursue longer-term initiatives.
  • Your technology infrastructure needs some degree of centralization, often more than you have, but not as much as the the billion-dollar company down the street.
  • If you're in a period of fast growth, you want results that are fast and not staggeringly expensive - if you're growing too fast, you may have to throw out your solutions every few years in favor of something drastically different.
  • Losing a technical employee can be very painful - If you had a technical staff of 10, and one quits, you just lost 10 percent of your IT department. If your staff is smaller, the numbers just get worse.
  • Sometimes you need another employee, but only on a part-time basis. Good technical people are often hard to come by with this arrangement, unless you pay the extra premium for contractors or professional freelancers.
